This week the highly anticipated “IT Chapter Two” opens and box office forecasters are estimating any opening weekend of anywhere from $90-100 million. The film is already breaking several advance sales records with Fandango and is on the top of its fall movie “want to see” consumer survey results. Critically, the film looks solid with a current Rotten Tomatoes score of 75% Fresh against 95 reviews.
Fall brings film festivals and typically Venice, Telluride and Toronto festivals offer a platform for not only for Oscar-bait films but also for mainstream movies that are looking to seek the attention of critics along with big opening weekends. Two critically favored films have emerged out of the Venice International Film Festival: WB’s “Joker” and Disney/Fox’s “AD Astra.” Currently “AD Astra” is at 86% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and “Joker” sits at 85% Fresh. “AD Astra” opens on September 20 and “Joker” opens on October 4. From Telluride, it looks like Fox/Disney’s “Ford V Ferrari’ will speed to the top of the box office when it opens on 11/15 as it has a current Rotten Tomatoes score of 100% Fresh.
"Downton Abbey," another fan-favorite property, climbs the stairs from the small screen to the big screen on September 20. To celebrate the film’s opening, Showcase SuperLux in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts is the only Boston-area cinema displaying an official “Downton Abbey” movie costume! The costume, worn by Maggie Smith in her fan favorite role of the Dowager Countess of Grantham, is now on display in the cinema’s lobby and will be on exhibit throughout the remainder of the month. When visiting Showcase SuperLux to see the film and costume, don’t forget to try a Downton Daiquiri!
